FISHING OR GOLF?

Fishing The River Snizort, which runs near to the Cottage and joins the sea at this point of Loch Snizort Beag, is reputed to be the best for salmon fishing on the Isle of Skye. Loch Snizort Beag is the only Skye sea-loch without any fish farm activity. Fishing permits are obtained from the Skeabost House Hotel and a permit is (2004) £20 per day for 8 miles, both banks. Permits are always available, though the river can be busy in July to early August, and mid-September to mid-October.

• Sea trout is fished from May to end-September/early October, and range from just under one pound to four pounds (500gm - 2kg).
• Salmon (grilse) is fished from end-June to end-October and range from 6 pounds to 9 pounds (3kg - 4kg). Within the last 15 years around 300 fish were being taken but recent catch numbers are down, although sea trout are far more abundant.
• Brown trout up to 4 pounds (2kg) are also found here; the Hotel maintains a boat on Storr Lochs in the north-east of the island; and there are 57 hill lochs to try.

Golf The Skeabost House Hotel also boasts a nine-hole Golf Course open to all. A round of 18 holes, using different tees, is a par 62 and will cost (2004) £15. This course is surrounded by trees.

The Isle of Skye Golf Club, also nine holes, is at Sconser which is halfway down the island, just beyond Sligachan. This course is adjacent to the sea and looks out onto the island of Raasay. Sconser
